Case Studies

New York City Transit (20,000+ trips per day)

Peak Vehicles: 1,800+

Peak Trips: 20,000+
Number of Work stations: 600+
Server & Client: Microsoft Windows XP

Challenge

NYCT was using a solution from a vendor that is perceived as a leader in transit industry. The solution could not handle heavy trip counts (3,000 or above) and practically broke down at the 5,000 trip level, creating a difficult situation for NYCT. Facing steady growth in demand for trips, NYCT recruited StrataGen to help with the situation.

Approach

Following product demonstrations, trials and feature/function due diligence, StrataGen worked with NYCT to define scope of work. Initial project was delivered in two phases with installation of ADEPT™ followed by a second phase of customizations six months later. StrataGen Systems developed software functionality and provided on-site project management; train the trainer, technical support, and trouble shooting.

Results

  • Productivity (trips/revenue-hour) increased by 30%
  • Service denials reduced from 4.8% to 0%
  • On-time performance improved from 90% to 95%
  • Call handling time reduced 30%
  • Total trips/day increased from 8,000 to 14,000

Midsize Transit Authority (400+ trips per day)

Peak Vehicles: 20
Peak Trips: 450
Number of Work stations: 3 plus public kiosks & dedicated telephones
Server & Client: Microsoft Windows 2000

Challenge

The client, a Western state agency was participating in a program to meet air pollution abatement goals in order to help mitigate the effects of rapid development in the region. There was economic, social and political pressure to manage its multi-provider transportation system more efficiently.

Approach

StrataGen Systems partnered with the procuring agency to bring coordination to several different transportation services. After making product demonstrations, performing trial schedule comparisons and due-diligence review, StrataGen developed detailed functional specifications to define the scope of work. An ADEPT™ with appropriate customization as necessary has resulted in a successful integration of transportation services utilizing several communication and technology media.

StrataGen Systems provided on-site project management, training, technical support, and troubleshooting. StrataGen partnered with leaders in the fields of Mobile Data, IVR, and information kiosks to provide riders with an extensive array of options to gain access to public transportation. ADEPT™ enabled passengers to board demand-response, fixed-route, flex-route and casino-shuttle services with ease and confidence. The specific solutions StrataGen used for this deployment were ADEPT™, AVL and MDTs, IVR Interface and Fixed Route and Feeder Service module.

Results

StrataGen Systems' success at integrating multiple transportation providers has resulted in a more streamlined system that more riders utilize every day. Casinos enjoy a balanced distribution of rider drop-offs due to ADEPT™’s use of a highly customized scheduling algorithm. Flex-route services have eased the burden on demand services. Integration of information by ADEPT™ to more media allows the general public and tourists easier access to transportation, and the increased efficiency of the system is also helping address air pollution concerns.

Valley Transit, Walla Walla, WA (100+ trips per day)

Peak Vehicles: 4
Peak Trips: 100
Number of Work stations: 3
Server & Client: Microsoft Windows 2000

Challenge

Valley Transit wanted to fulfill its mission to provide high quality and efficient public transportation services that are responsive to the needs of the community. One immediate goal was to make Dial-A-Ride van operators and dispatchers more efficient, thus providing an increase in available capacity for daily one-way trips with no increase in vehicles or driver hours

Approach

StrataGen helped the agency provide more trips without having adding additional vehicles. In addition, StrataGen implemented AVL and MDTs as well as a feeder service module that brought demand response riders into the fixed route system achieving extensive cost savings for the transit system. The specific solutions used for this deployment were ADEPT™, Feeder Service Module, AVL and MDTs and the ADEPT™ Manage My Trips.

Results

The software has increased the productivity of Valley Transit by sharing more rides and better use of the fleet. Through more efficient scheduling, Valley eliminated one vehicle saving $43,000 per year for depreciation, maintenance, fuel and other operational expenses-- a 15% reduction. The system was also able to shelve plans to add additional resources to assist in scheduling and dispatch. The use of the Feeder Service Module has eased the strain on the Demand Response service and made fixed route travel available to more passengers.
